Oh and one more thing – I married an inventor! Isn’t that just about THE COOLEST THING EVER?! He’s the heart and soul of the Web Lite group of companies…Check out the stuff he’s made:
Web Lite TV – “Web Lite TV™ is a simple application for Mac OS X™ that allows you to stream videos from your iTunes™ library to your iPhone™, iPod touch™, or iPad™.” Interesting Fact: Web Lite TV was born because Steve got an iPad and wanted to watch movies in bed without the hassle of copying huge files from device to device. http://tv.weblite.ca
PDF OCR X – “PDF OCR X is a simple drag-and-drop utility for Mac OS X and Windows, that converts your PDFs and images into text documents. It uses advanced OCR (optical character recognition) technology to extract the text of the PDF even if that text is contained in an image. This is particularly useful for dealing with PDFs that were created via a Scan-to-PDF function in a scanner or photo copier.” Interesting Facts: PDF OCR X was born because secretaries use scanners a lot and kept on pestering him for something that would do OCR without all the fuss. Also was used in the early stages in a linguistics research project for analysing corpus data for reflexives in Plains Cree. Super cool. http://pdfocrx.com
PDF to Spreadsheet Pro – Easily convert your scanned PDFs into editable Excel spreadsheets on Mac OS X. Features: One click conversion from PDF to Excel (or compatible Spreadsheet application); Supports scanned PDFs; Uses advanced optical character recognition (OCR) optional; Automatic detection of rows and columns. http://solutions.weblite.ca/pdf-to-spreadsheet/
Xataface – “Xataface is a flexible and shapable skin that sits on top of MySQL, making it accessible to every-day users. It automatically generates the appropriate forms, lists, and menus for a user to interact with the database without having to know any SQL. It is a full-featured Web application framework, and gives developers the flexibility to customize the features and behavior of their application via configuration files (using the simple INI-file syntax), templates, and plug-ins. A generic application with no customizations is completely functional, but the developer is free to customize things at his leisure.” Interesting Facts: When I met Steve in 2004, he kept talking about this thing that he wanted to make, so that he could be free from Filemaker…preferrably forever. So he made it. So if you’re a database administrator and you need to make applications for the non-tech savvy *Cough*secretaries*Cough*, check this out. http://xataface.com
Translation Sells – by Weblite Translation Corp. – “Web Lite Translation Services combines cutting-edge technology with quality, professional translators to make the translation of your website simple and painless.” Translation Sells is a full-service solution, but if you want a more DIY management solution for your multilingual website, check out Web Lite SWeTE (Simple Website Translation Engine) for a low-cost, hands-on solution. Interesting Facts: The Web Lite SWeTE technology works EXTREMELY well with small static sites, ~15 pages or less, where all the words and links are text based (and not in images). Larger dynamic sites have been done too – check out the Preston Manning centre site under the “Our Clients” tab. http://translationsells.com, http://translate.weblite.ca, http://swete.weblite.ca
